Bottom drops out from under CT Energia in loss to White Birch

CT Energia (Alessandro Bazzoni, Nick Manifold, Joao Paulo Ganon and Kris Kampsen) took advantage of a one goal handicap from the 20-goal White Birch team (Matias Sosa, Hilario Ulloa, Mariano Aguerre and Peter Brant) to move in front 6-5 at the end of the second chukker when the bottom dropped out from under them Monday morning. Seven unanswered goals by White Birch Farm left CT Energia trailing 12-6 at halftime, paving the way for the White Birch win as competition continued in the 2014 Tommy Glynn Memorial Cup at the Greenwich Polo Club.

CT Energia received one goal by handicap, but it was White Birch team captain Peter Brant who scored first from the field for an early 1-1 tie. Hilario Ulloa’s first goal of the day gave White Birch a 2-1 edge, but the lead was short-lived. Alessandro Bazzoni tied it up at 2-2 and teammate Kris Kampsen converted a penalty shot to put CT Energia on top, 3-2. Ulloa evened the score at 3-3 on a penalty shot that ended the period.

Mariano Aguerre opened the scoring in the second for a 4-3 White Birch lead, but CT Energia charged back into the game. Consecutive goals from Bazzoni and Brazilian 7-goaler Joao Ganon had CT Energia in front, 5-4. Ulloa converted a 30-yard penalty shot to deadlock it once again, 5-5. Kampsen scored the final goal of the chukker from the field to put CT Energia in the lead, 6-5.

Following a competitive first two chukkers, the wheels came off the wagon for CT Energia in the third.

“We’d have been better off not even going onto the field in the third,” said Kampsen shaking his head.

For as well as CT Energia played in the opening two chukkers, the third was a disaster for them. Seven consecutive goals from White Birch buried the 19-goal team and had them trailing by six goals, 12-6, at the end of the first half of play. Ulloa scored four times, Aguerre registered two goals and Brant added the final goal of the chukker.

A different CT Energia defense showed up for the fourth chukker, limiting White Birch to a single goal from Ulloa. CT Energia, however, was unable to get on the scoreboard for the second consecutive chukker and trailed by seven goals, 13-6.

Brant stretched the White Birch lead to eight goals, 14-6, with a penalty conversion to open the period. Kampsen converted a 60-yard penalty shot and Ganon added a goal from the field. With one chukker left to play, White Birch sat on top of a very comfortable 14-8 lead.

CT Energia tried desperately to get back into the game, but the deficit was too much. Kampsen converted a pair of penalty shots to end the game as White Birch remained unbeaten with a 14-10 win. Ulloa led all scoring with eight goals. Aguerre and Brant scored three goals apiece for the victory. Kampsen’s five goals set the pace for CT Energia. Ganon and Bazzoni scored two goals each in a losing effort.
